Old Prisoners Busted For Drugs and Alcohol
More than 350 prison inmates have been caught out by drug and alcohol tests in the past nine months in Queensland. Corrective Services Minister Neil Roberts said 355 inmates had tested positive in 11,301 tests administered between July 2009 and March 2010.
In the 12 months to June 2009, 514 prisoners recorded positive results from 18,899 tests. Mr Roberts said the tests covered alcohol, opiates, cocaine, benzodiazepines, cannabis, amphetamines and buprenorphine. "Offenders in custody who test positive to a prohibited substance are subject to penalties, including a loss of phone privileges, contact visits and prison employment, as well as restricted movement," Mr Roberts said.
"Criminal charges may also result." He said the testing was working. Around four per cent of tests came back positive, which was a significant decline from the 25.7 per cent recorded in 1997/98 when the coalition was in government, Mr Roberts said.
