New findings reveal health dangers of Ecstasy drug

Findings show that a new ingredient being used in the Ecstasy drug, Benzylpiperazine (BZP), can cause liver and kidney damage.  The high toxicity of the drug can be fatal.  The new data is hoped to bring much needed information and guidance to medical staff who have to deal with users of the drug.

Research from Anglia Ruskin University is thought to be the first of its kind.  Professor Mike Cole said, “Before our research there had been no systematic study of the toxicity of these drugs and this is needed if we are to treat drug users effectively and inform people of the potential hazards associated with taking them.”

The increased availability of drugs such as Ecstasy has been closely followed by an increase in the amount of deaths and serious illness in those who take the drug.
