Carl Burgess Arrested In Drugs Swoop
Coventry rugby player was arrested during a huge swoop by police investigating a gang of drug dealers. Carl Burgess, aged 24, had been due to play for Coventry at Esher on Saturday but instead was one of six defendants appearing before a special court charged with conspiracy to supply class A drugs. He had been arrested on Thursday during an operation by Northamptonshire police. They were investigating organized crime IN Northampton dating back to 2003. At Kettering magistrates court, Burgess, of no fixed address, was remanded in custody, along with five other men. All will appear before Northampton Crown Court on April 3.
Burgess, a 6ft 9in second row forward, joined the club last summer as a non-contract player and had played 25 times for the Butts Park Arena club. Coventry RFC chairman Andrew Green said the allegations had come as “a complete surprise” to the club.
“Carl was brought to us before the start of the season by a known and trusted agent who has a long association with the game. He has come on in leaps and bounds as a player and been a dedicated, hard-working member of the squad.
