Abuse of a Prescription Drug Most Common in Students
According to a survey which was conducted nationwide, one in every five high school children had taken a prescription drug without a doctor's suggestion. Danice Eaton of the CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health in Atlanta, Ga., found that abuse of a prescription drug among was 23% in white students and 17.2% in Hispanics and11.8% in Blacks.
About 15.1% children studying in ninth grade and about 25.8% children studying in 12th grade had fallen prey to improper use of prescription drugs. As a matter of fact, both the girls and boys were equally prone to abuse a prescription medication.
The findings came from the 2009 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey. It was the first year in which questions related to prescription drug use were asked. The findings of the survey were different from another federally sponsored survey, which reported that there has been no raise in most prescription drug abuse in 8th, 10th and 12th graders.
Eaton and her colleagues wrote, “More effective school health programs and other policy and programmatic interventions are needed to reduce risk and improve health outcomes among youth”.
The use of alcohol and illegal drugs was also prevalent, in addition to the prescription drug abuse, according to the 2009 survey.
